“WELCOME-Integration of young refugees through sport activity” is a project co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.
It is a “Small Collaborative Partnership” project aiming at encouraging social inclusion and equal opportunities in sport, which fall under the wider specific objective of the Erasmus + Programme “promote voluntary activities in sport, together with social inclusion, equal opportunities and awareness of the importance of health-enhancing physical activity through increased participation and equal access to sport for all”.
The partnership includes two Multisport Clubs, HAŠK Mladost (Croatia) and Athlītikos Podosfairikos Omilos Ellīnōn Leukōsias – APOEL (Cyprus), with Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica S.S. Lazio Basket (Italy) as Lead Partner.
The purpose of the project is to create a sustainable model of integration/social inclusion replicable by different clubs and in different contexts.
WELCOME involves young refugees/asylum seekers in free weekly sports activities during which they meet, on a regular basis, a sports psychologist.
In the preparation phase, a group of Coaches of the three partner Clubs are trained in e-learning/webinar mode on the EU Health-Enhancing Physical Activity Guidelines (HEPA Guidelines), on refugees/asylum seekers issues, on the approach to be taken with the young participants as well as strategies and methodologies to include young people from different cultures in the sports activities. The e-learning programme is developed also on the basis of a needs analysis questionnaire previously distributed to both the local coordinators and the selected coaches.
In the implementation phase, refugees/asylum seekers are involved in free weekly sports activities with the Clubs’ coaches and a sports psychologist.
The Project “WELCOME-Integration of young refugees through sport activity” foresees also a final e-learning module on fundraising strategies and seminars among Coordinators to discuss the state of the art of the project as well as to present it to the stakeholders.
